I transformed my casual TikTok scrolling into a whopping $8,304.12 in earnings in May. It’s not my lowest month and not my highest. This wasn’t just luck; it was the culmination of curiosity, creativity, and a bit of digital savvy. My journey from creating viral dating advice videos to becoming a TikTok Shop affiliate has been a whirlwind adventure.
With a background in affiliate marketing, I figured, “Why not see where this can go?” And oh, how far it went!
Choosing products initially felt like a stab in the dark—picking items I liked, such as a trendy mirror, stylish jeans, and an eye-catching makeup palette. To my astonishment, these picks resonated massively, catapulting my follower count and vastly multiplying my sales. That initial success—around $60,000 in just a few months—hooked me in.
But it’s not just about picking the right products. I quickly learned the ropes of TikTok Shop, enjoying the thrills of daily deposits and the flexibility to cash out my earnings practically at will. Also, mastering TikTok’s algorithm became my new game, figuring out how to make my content reach both my followers and the expansive audience of the For You page.
I share these insights not to boast but to illuminate the path for others. At 50, modeling bathing suits on TikTok wasn’t something I envisioned, yet here I am, embracing every step of this journey. From utilizing free samples strategically to leveraging powerful tools like Kalodata for pinpointing best-sellers, my tactics are now your guide.
Not every video was a hit from the start, and patience played a key role in my strategy. Some videos gained traction weeks later, reminding me of the importance of perseverance and adaptability in this fast-paced digital arena.
As someone who has navigated the intricate dance of content creation, affiliate marketing, and TikTok’s ever-evolving platform, I’m here to tell you that it’s possible. You can make a significant income, engage with a vibrant community, and even enjoy the process.
If you’re sitting on the edge of your seat, wondering if you could replicate my success, the answer is a resounding “Yes!” Whether you’re an aspiring TikToker, a curious observer, or someone searching for their next big break, I invite you to dive into the world of TikTok Shop. My journey, filled with tips, strategies, and personal anecdotes, is now an open book for you to learn from and, hopefully, to write your own success story.
Daily Deposits and Cash-Out Flexibility
TikTok Shop paid me $8,304.12 in May, based on daily deposits. I cashed out 23 times during the month. One of the perks of being a TikTok Shop affiliate is the flexibility in how often you can cash out your earnings.
You could cash out 30 times a month, or choose to cash out every two weeks or even once a week. While I’ve heard this might change to a weekly cash-out system, for May, I had the freedom to cash out whenever I wanted.
Helpful Tip: Track your earnings and cash-out schedule to manage your finances better and maximize your income potential.
Video Performance and Content Creation
In May, I had around 31,000 followers on TikTok. For those who might not know, when you create a TikTok Shop video to promote a product from someone else’s store, you earn a commission as an affiliate.
TikTok initially shows your video to a small sample of people, typically a few hundred, and based on the interaction with that video, it decides whether to push it to a larger audience. This means that many of your followers might not see every video you post, so producing a lot of content is crucial.
I often hear my TikTok students express concerns about spamming their audience. However, most of your videos are only shown to a small fraction of your followers initially. If the video performs well, it might move to the For You page, where TikTok suggests content to users who aren’t following you.
I spend most of my time on the For You page because I enjoy discovering new content and products.
Helpful Tip: Initially, you may not have a “niche.” You could focus on best sellers (the TikTok app will show those), get items you want like I did and start there, or throw spaghetti at the wall, so to speak, and try various things and see what sticks.
At 50 years old, I never thought I would be modeling bathing suits, but when I tried multiple things, bathing suits worked!
How TikTok’s Algorithm Works and Getting on the For You Page
One key factor in earning money on TikTok is understanding how the algorithm works. When you create a TikTok Shop video, TikTok initially shows your video to a small sample of people, typically a few hundred. This is a testing phase where the algorithm gauges the interaction with your video.
How the Algorithm Tests Your Videos
- Initial Exposure: Your video is shown to a small audience, usually just a few hundred users.
- Engagement Metrics: TikTok measures how this small group interacts with your video. Key metrics include likes, comments, shares, and watch time.
- Performance Assessment: The algorithm decides whether your video has potential based on these engagement metrics. If the interaction rates are high, TikTok will promote your video to a larger audience.
Sometimes, a video will take off later because that item goes on a flash sale or viral. You may think your video failed, and then suddenly, it just starts going viral and making sales. Dont’ delete videos if you can avoid it, it’s a bad signal to TikTok, and could hurt your views.
Getting on the For You Page
The For You page (FYP) is where TikTok suggests videos to users based on their interests and previous interactions. This is where most of the money is made because it exposes your content to a vast audience who aren’t following you yet. Here’s how to maximize your chances of getting on the FYP:
- Create Engaging Content: Focus on making videos that captivate viewers in the first few seconds. High engagement rates in the initial testing phase are crucial.
- Use Relevant Hashtags: Include popular and relevant hashtags to help the algorithm categorize your content and push it to the right audience.
- Consistency is Key: Posting regularly increases your chances of getting more videos on the FYP, boosting overall visibility and potential earnings.
Helpful Tip
Optimize for Engagement: My videos range from 15 seconds to 90 seconds. I find the sweet spot on TikTok to be around 45 seconds, but I tend to make them longer so that they will feed to YouTube as a standard video rather than a “short.” I mix them up.
How I Choose Products to Promote
When it comes to choosing products to promote on TikTok Shop, I have a couple of strategies that work really well.
Free Samples
The bulk of the items I promote come from free samples. Brands that sell their products on TikTok will often send affiliates like me a free product in exchange for a video. This is a fantastic way to try new items without spending a dime. The exception is when I want something specific.
I try to find items that are also sold on Amazon so I can benefit from both platforms. I can get up to 20 samples at a time from TikTok Shop based on my production rate. “At a time” includes items I’ve requested that are pending approval, items in the process of shipping, and items I have received but haven’t yet made a video on.
Once I make the video, it falls off the pending list, and I can request another sample.
Helpful Tip: It’s worth noting that these items may count as income due to the requirement to make a video, but some tax advisors suggest they aren’t taxable since the video is “requested” rather than required. Always consult your tax advisor for clarity on this.
TikTok scores you on your product selection, so I advise you to only work with stores with good reviews and choose products with good reviews.
Best Sellers on Kalodata
Another way I choose products is by finding best sellers listed on Kalodata. Kalodata is a powerful tool that provides insights into trending products and best sellers on various platforms.
By leveraging Kalodata, I can identify popular items likely to perform well and resonate with my audience. This helps me make informed decisions about which products to promote.

Organic Content Creation
I posted about five daily videos in May, which was my usual routine. While this might sound overwhelming, it’s part of my everyday flow. I don’t time-block for creating TikTok videos; I incorporate them naturally into my daily activities.
For example, if I’m getting ready to go somewhere, I might record myself using my blow dryer brush or applying mascara. I might also show my outfit of the day or capture my cat drinking from his wireless pet fountain.
These are all items sold on TikTok; promoting them is a seamless part of my routine. Occasionally, I schedule time to create specific content, like a summer swimsuit haul, but generally, it’s an organic process. I typically spend no more than an hour or two a day making TikTok videos.
Helpful Tip: Use simple equipment like your phone, a tripod, and occasionally an extra video light if needed to keep your content creation process straightforward and efficient.
In this course, I show my workflow, including exactly how I create my product review videos and how I post them to all of the various platforms to optimize my efforts.
A Day in the Life
Here’s a sample “day in the life” to give you an idea of how I manage my content creation:
- Morning: While getting ready, I record a quick video using my blow dryer brush or applying makeup.
- Midday: Capture a video of my lunch prep, showing off a fancy pan I bought on TikTok.
- Afternoon: Take a quick video of my cat drinking from his wireless pet fountain.
- Evening: Do an outfit of the day video before heading out.
- Throughout the Day: Spend a few minutes checking analytics and researching trending products using Kalodata for TikTok and Sortiox for Amazon.
TikTok Bonuses for Challenges
Another fantastic way I earn money on TikTok is through their bonus challenges. In May, I made around $2,000 from these challenge rewards. These challenges offer bonuses based on creating short-form videos or live streams. For example, I earned $1,000 for ranking in one short-form video challenge.
These challenges are usually pretty easy to hit in my case. You must add a hashtag that meets the challenge requirements and cover whatever products or themes they suggest. I almost always jump in and participate because there’s no drawback, even if you don’t complete them.
To qualify for these challenges, you must register when invited. TikTok will send you an invitation, and you must sign up to be eligible for the rewards.
Helpful Tip: I highly recommend everyone attempt these challenges. It’s a great way to earn extra money and gain more visibility on the platform. Plus, it’s a fun way to get creative with your content.

Leveraging Multiple Platforms
To maximize my reach, I use a software called Repurpose to distribute my TikTok videos to Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube. This helps me generate income on multiple platforms.
I also upload my TikTok videos to my Amazon Influencer account if the items are sold on Amazon. This integrated approach ensures that I’m consistently creating and sharing content across various channels, contributing to a steady five-figure monthly income.
Helpful Tip: Repurposing your content across multiple platforms can help you reach a wider audience and increase your earning potential.
Repurpose.io is a platform designed to help content creators maximize their reach and efficiency by making it easy to repurpose their video and audio content across multiple social media platforms. The service automates the process of converting, for instance, a single piece of content, like a video or a podcast, into various formats suitable for different social media channels such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and more.
Video Views and Engagement
May wasn’t my best month, but it was solid, with 3,355,777 video views. This level of engagement shows that consistent content creation pays off. My approach is to create engaging, authentic videos that naturally fit into my daily life, making the process sustainable and enjoyable.
By sharing my experiences and favorite products organically, I connect with my audience genuinely. This strategy drives sales and builds a loyal following that trusts my recommendations.
With the holiday season expected to boost earnings, I anticipate another successful year, just like last year. With the holiday season, I expect it to be 6-figures.
