Last week I was in Alaska. My business ran without me.
Three real vacations in twelve weeks. I never opened my laptop, never touched the ship’s wifi — and nobody noticed I was gone. Here’s the kind of business that makes that normal, and how I built mine from zero.
What actually makes leaving free
Leaving costs nothing
I took my siblings to Alaska and never connected to the ship. The business ran and earned the whole week — the trip didn’t cost me a thing.
I chose solo on purpose
Burned out on teams at 47, I stopped being an entrepreneur and became a solopreneur. No employees, no clients, no one to answer to.
A few focused lanes
The income comes from a handful of lanes. If a project doesn’t fit one, the answer is just no. Doing less, on purpose.
Systems do the work
It’s just me creating — and a set of systems quietly running in the background whether I’m at my desk or on a boat off Alaska.
From a team of many to a business of one
I’m not going to walk you through every mechanic here — this is the picture. But the shape of the shift is simple.
Hit the wall
I’d built a whole career on leverage — teams, systems, other people. Around 47 I burned out on hiring, firing, and managing all day. I wanted to create, not manage.
Went solo
I did the thing that shocked everyone who knew me: I left the team model. I stopped calling myself an entrepreneur and became a solopreneur.
Picked my lanes
I chose a few income streams that fit me and said no to everything that didn’t. That focus is the whole thing.
Built the systems
I set up systems that keep running whether I show up that day or not — so the parts that matter don’t depend on me being at my desk.
Made rest part of the work
Hermit mode when I need to build; go play when I need to live. Both are the job now — not a reward for the job.
