Let’s walk through the basic steps of creating a template. Imagine we’re making a simple set of five Instagram post templates for our “Life Coaches” niche.

First, go to Canva and pick your dimensions. For an Instagram post, you’d select the preset for that, which is typically 1080 by 1080 pixels. This ensures your final product is perfectly optimized.

Next, start designing for your buyer. This is a key mental shift. You aren’t just making a pretty picture; you’re creating a functional template. Use elements like “frames,” which are placeholders where your customer can easily drag and drop their own photos. Add text boxes with placeholder text like “Your Quote Here” or “Weekly Tip.”

Think about your niche. For a life coach, you’d want a calming, professional color palette and clean, easy-to-read fonts. You’d create a few different layouts: one for a client testimonial, one for an inspirational quote, one to announce a new blog post, etc. A great tip for beginners is to start with a small, cohesive bundle of 3 to 5 templates. It feels more valuable than a single template and encourages a sale.

While designing, be aware of Canva’s licensing. The big rule is that you must be selling a unique design that you created. You can’t just take a pre-made Canva template, change the words, and resell it. Likewise, you can’t sell standalone Canva Pro elements. Now, for the most important part: how you deliver it. You do not just share the design with your customer, as they would be editing your original master file. The magic key is something called a Template Link.

Once your design is perfect, click the “Share” button in the top right. Then, look for the “Template link” option. When you generate this link, anyone who clicks it is prompted to create their own copy of your design in their Canva account. They can edit their copy all they want, and your original master file stays untouched. This feature makes the entire business model possible.

An Important Canva Update You MUST Know

A very important update from Canva affects anyone selling templates. As of early 2025, the ability to create and share new Template Links is now a premium feature. This means to be a seller of Canva templates, you will need a Canva Pro account.

While this means it’s not entirely free to start, think of the Pro subscription as your single, low-cost business investment. It’s a tiny fraction of what it would cost to buy inventory for a physical product business.

The good news is that your customers do NOT need a Canva Pro account to use your templates. As long as your customer has a regular email address, they can still open, copy, and edit the template link you send them using their free Canva account.

To be crystal clear: you, the seller, need Canva Pro to get the template link. Your buyer is perfectly fine with a free account. Don’t let this change stop you. It’s just a small, professional cost of doing business.

Step 3: Setting Up Your Shop on Etsy

You have your niche and your first template bundle is ready. Now, where do you sell it? While there are platforms like Gumroad or your own website, the number one recommendation for beginners is Etsy.

The reason is simple: traffic. Starting your own website can feel like a ghost town initially, requiring you to spend all your time on marketing. Etsy, on the other hand, is a massive, established marketplace with millions of buyers actively searching for products like yours every single day. It solves the traffic problem for you so you can focus on creating.

Setting up an Etsy shop is straightforward. You’ll need a shop name; a pro tip is to make it relevant to your niche. If you sell planners, having “planners” or “designs” in the name helps. You’ll design a simple logo and a shop banner—which you can do for free right inside Canva. Showcasing your best templates in your banner gives visitors an instant vibe check of your style.

Now for the crucial part of the setup: delivering your product. We know you have your Canva Template Link, but Etsy doesn’t let you just paste a link; you have to upload a file.

This is where the “PDF Bridge” method comes in. You create one more design in Canva—a simple, one-page PDF. On this PDF, you’ll put a thank you message, some brief instructions, and most importantly, a clickable link to your Canva Template. You can write something like “Click Here to Access Your Templates” and hyperlink that text with your special link.

You then download this document as a PDF. This PDF file is what you upload to your Etsy listing. When someone buys your product, they get an instant download for this PDF. They open it, click the link, and are taken right to Canva to get their copy of your template. It’s clean, professional, and completely automated.

Finally, let’s talk fees, because transparency is key. Selling on Etsy isn’t free, but the fees are reasonable. As of 2025, you can expect three main fees:

  1. A Listing Fee: $0.20 for each product you list, which is good for four months or until it sells.
  2. A Transaction Fee: 6.5% of the total sale amount.
  3. A Payment Processing Fee: This varies by country, but in the US it’s usually 3% of the total sale plus $0.25.

When you add it all up, Etsy takes a small cut in exchange for giving you access to its massive audience. For a beginner, that trade-off is 100% worth it.

Step 4: Pricing & Marketing for Your First Sale

You’re on the home stretch. Your shop is set up and your product is ready. The last piece of the puzzle is to price it right and present it in a way that gets you that first amazing sale.

Let’s talk pricing. One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is pricing their products way too low. Do not price based on your time; price based on the value and the solution you’re providing. Instead of “Instagram Templates,” use “Minimalist Instagram Post & Story Templates for Health Coaches.” Use all 13 of your tags, and fill them with every relevant phrase you can dream of. Think like your customer. What would they type in the search bar? “Canva Template,” “Social Media Pack,” “Content Creator,” “Life Coach Branding,” and so on. Good Etsy SEO is the simplest and most effective way to get your first sales without spending a dime on ads.
