Skip niche research and nothing else matters. Here’s the order that actually gets a journal published and selling.
Find a profitable niche
Type a broad idea into Amazon’s search bar and watch the autocomplete suggestions. Niche down until the results drop under about 1,000, then check the Best Seller Rank on the first page. A few books under 300,000 means real, active buyers.
Read reviews and gather keywords
Read the 3 and 4-star reviews on the top books in your niche. Customers tell you exactly what’s missing, that’s your product development roadmap. Then use the “alphabet soup” trick in Amazon’s search bar to collect your top 7 keywords.
Choose your specs and design the interior
Pick a trim size (6×9 is a popular, portable choice), a page count (100 to 120 is a good start), and no-bleed for simplicity. In Canva, set your document to inches, add a safety margin, design one strong page, then duplicate it to fill your book.
Design a cover that converts
Search “KDP Cover Calculator” for Amazon’s free tool, plug in your exact specs, and download your template. Build your front, spine, and back in Canva using the template as a guide, then delete that guide layer before you export.
Upload and publish on KDP
At kdp.amazon.com, fill in your title, subtitle, description, and your 7 keywords, mark it as a low-content book, and upload both PDFs. Use the previewer to check every page before you approve it, then set your territories and price and hit publish.
