Creating YouTube Shorts from longer videos using Descript is a great way to repurpose content and capture attention with bite-sized clips. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

1. Import Your Video
Start by opening Descript and creating a new project.
Drag and drop your long video into Descript, or use the import option to select the video file from your computer. Descript will transcribe the audio into text, making it easier to navigate and edit the video.
2. Identify and Select Segments
Play through your transcript and identify engaging segments that are suitable for a short video. These segments should be concise, clear, and ideally under 60 seconds to fit the Shorts format.
Highlight the text in the transcript that corresponds to the segment you want for your Short. Descript allows you to edit the video by editing the text, which is incredibly convenient.
3. Edit the Segment
Once you’ve selected your segment, you can cut out any unnecessary parts or mistakes by simply deleting the text in the transcript. The video will be edited accordingly.
Use the trimming tools to precisely adjust the start and end points of your segment.
4. Add Text and Captions
To make your Short more engaging, consider adding text overlays or captions. Descript makes this easy with its built-in text tools.
You can also add captions automatically to ensure your content is accessible to all viewers, including those who watch without sound.
5. Enhance with Effects and Transitions
If desired, add effects or transitions to make the Short more dynamic. This can help keep the viewer’s attention and make the content more visually appealing.
6. Export the Short
Once you’re happy with your edited segment, it’s time to export. Select the “Export” option and choose the format suitable for YouTube Shorts. Ensure the aspect ratio is set to 9:16, which is optimal for mobile viewers.
Export the file and it’s ready to be uploaded to YouTube as a Short.
7. Upload to YouTube
Go to your YouTube channel and select the ‘Create’ button, then choose ‘Upload videos’.
Follow the prompts to upload your new Short, including adding a catchy title, description, and relevant tags to ensure it reaches your target audience.
Using Descript not only simplifies the editing process but also saves a lot of time when creating multiple Shorts from a single long-form video. This approach can enhance your content’s reach as YouTube Shorts are favored by the algorithm for quick browsing and can attract a lot of views quickly.
