WooCommerce SEO for 2022: Better Chances for Higher Search Rankings

WooCommerce SEO for 2022: Better Chances for Higher Search Rankings

Do you have a WooCommerce store? You aren’t alone. Shopify is open-source, customizable, and scalable, making it a popular platform for e-commerce stores.

As a WordPress plugin, however, WooCommerce requires some manual search engine optimization (SEO). It’s not particularly SEO-friendly out of the box. Your WooCommerce store may still rank in the search results, but you can optimize it for higher search rankings. Here’s what you need to know about WooCommerce SEO

Customize Meta Titles for Product Pages

Customize Meta Titles for Product Pages

Meta titles can affect your WooCommerce search rankings. Also known as title tags, they are mandatory Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) web page elements. Each page on your WooCommerce store must have a single meta tag that denotes the page’s title.

WordPress will generate meta titles automatically using the text that you enter in the editor’s title section. While these automatically generated meta titles may suffice for some pages, product pages typically need custom meta titles.

With custom meta titles, you can control the appearance of your WooCommerce store’s product pages in the search results.

You can create custom meta titles for product pages by installing a separate plugin.

All in One SEO (AIOSEO) and Joost de Valk’s Yoast SEO offer meta title customization. Using one of these plugins, give each product page a custom meta title that mentions the name of the respective product in 60 total characters or less.

Write Compelling, Keyword-Rich Product Descriptions

Write Compelling, Keyword-Rich Product Descriptions

Product descriptions are important.

When shoppers browse your WooCommerce store, they’ll probably read the product descriptions to determine which products to buy. Search engines read them as well. Rather than using them to make purchasing decisions, though, search engines use product descriptions to calculate search rankings for product pages.

Writing compelling, keyword-rich product descriptions will help your WooCommerce SEO, generate more online sales and earn higher search rankings.

Avoid using manufacturer-supplied product descriptions.

Some manufacturers provide them to stores that sell their products, but using them means your WooCommerce store will have the same product descriptions as other stores. For better WooCommerce SEO, write your own compelling and keyword-rich product descriptions.

You can write a product description when creating a new product page. Clicking “WooCommerce” in the WordPress admin panel, followed by “Products” and then “Add New” will allow you to create a new product page.

Reduce the File Size of Product Photos

Reduce the File Size of Product Photos

Another WooCommerce SEO tip is to reduce the file size of product photos. Unlike logos and icons, product photos typically feature large dimensional sizes and a high resolution. These properties promote detail, but they come at the cost of bigger file size.

Fortunately, you can reduce the file size of product photos without making them look blurry.

A compression tool can reduce their file size while retaining their detail. There are web-based compression tools, such as Smush Pro, and there are compression tool plugins. You can use them to compress your WooCommerce store’s product photos so that they have a smaller size.

Smaller file sizes will result in faster load times. Your WooCommerce store’s product pages will load in less time. Speed is a search engine ranking signal, so a smaller file size may lead to higher rankings.

Add an Alt Text Description to Product Photos

In addition to reducing their file size, you should add an alt text description to product photos. Alt-text descriptions are snippets that describe product photos and other website images. They aren’t the same as captions.

Captions are displayed directly below or alongside images and may or may not describe images.

Alt-text descriptions, conversely, are pieces of hidden code that are designed specifically to describe images. Although they aren’t visible, alt text descriptions are still seen by search engines.

To add an alt text description to a product photo, use the WordPress editor.

WooCommerce features the same editor as WordPress. When creating a new product page, you can upload product photos using the editor. You can then customize these uploaded product photos with an alt text description.

Clicking an uploaded product photo in the editor will reveal its properties in the “Block” tab to the right. The “Block” tab features an alt text description field.

Customize Permalinks in WordPress

Don’t forget to customize your WooCommerce store’s permalinks in WordPress. WordPress refers to URL slugs as permalinks. Except for the homepage, each page on your WooCommerce store will have a permalink.

The default permalinks are not SEO friendly. They are long, messy, and unattractive. You can create custom, SEO-friendly permalinks in the WordPress admin panel. The “Plain” option is the default permalinks.

For SEO-friendly permalinks, choose an opinion that includes the title, such as “Post Name” or “Month and Name.” SEO-friendly permalinks are clean and descriptive. Choosing either of these options will result in clean and descriptive permalinks.

Deploy Breadcrumb Links

Deploy Breadcrumb Links

Breadcrumb links can improve your WooCommerce store’s SEO. Breadcrumb links are navigation links that feature descriptive anchor text and a hierarchy. They allow shoppers to see where they are on your WooCommerce store. If a shopper wants to go back to a previous page, he or she can click the breadcrumb link for that page.

While WooCommerce doesn’t offer built-in breadcrumb links, it supports them via a plugin. You can use a plugin to deploy breadcrumb links on your store for WooCommerce SEO.

AIOSEO and RankMath offer breadcrumb links. Alternatively, there are dedicated breadcrumb link plugins like BreadCrumb NavXT.

Breadcrumb links will make your WooCommerce store easier to navigate. Shoppers will still be able to use your WooCommerce store’s navigation menu, but they’ll also be able to use the breadcrumb links. Breadcrunk links are simply an alternative system of navigation.

And because they feature descriptive anchor text and a hierarchy, many shoppers prefer using them.

Because they improve navigation, breadcrumb links are SEO friendly. Shoppers will visit more pages on your WooCommerce store, and they’ll perform more engagement actions.

WooCommerce SEO Best Practices

WooCommerce SEO includes many of the same optimization processes as WordPress SEO. After all, WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin.

You can’t build a WooCommerce store without first installing WordPress. Customizing meta titles for product pages, writing compelling and keyword-rich product descriptions, reducing the file size of product photos, adding an alt text description to product photos, customizing the permalinks, and deploying breadcrumb links will improve its SEO.
