This was my first solo trip, and I couldn’t be more excited to share the incredible experiences I had as a solo adventurer in Santa Barbara. Exploring the zoo and embarking on a thrilling whale watching tour were not only easy to do alone but also immensely rewarding. Let me take you through one of the highlights of my trip: whale watching on the Condor Express.
Why Choose Whale Watching in Santa Barbara?

Santa Barbara’s coastal waters are teeming with diverse marine life. On a typical trip, you might see gray whales, humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, and more. What to Know Before You Board
Weather and Clothing
Even in the heat of summer, the open waters can be unexpectedly cold and windy. Many passengers, including myself, found themselves freezing and retreating into the cabin for warmth. However, staying inside the cabin can increase the likelihood of motion sickness due to the boat’s movement. Therefore, it’s crucial to bring layers and plenty of warm clothing to stay comfortable on the deck. Hats, gloves, and a windbreaker are highly recommended.
Seating and Standing
Be prepared for the possibility of standing during the trip, as there aren’t always enough seats for everyone. Standing also allows for better viewing opportunities, so it’s beneficial to move around the deck.
Food and Beverage
The Condor Express offers food and beverages for purchase on board. While they provide a selection of snacks and drinks, you might want to bring your own snacks and drinks to ensure you have everything you need.
Wildlife Sightings
Depending on the season, you might see different species of whales and other marine creatures. The crew does their best to ensure sightings, but remember that wildlife can be unpredictable.

My Solo Travel Experience
Booking and Preparation
I booked my trip online through the Condor Express website, which was seamless and user-friendly. I recommend booking in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure your spot. Remember to bring a jacket and comfortable shoes, as it can get chilly on the water.
The Journey
The trip lasted about 4 hours, offering ample time to enjoy the marine life and scenic views. One of the most memorable parts of the journey was encountering hundreds of dolphins. They were so close to the boat that we could capture stunning photos and videos, both above and below the water. The sight of dolphins swimming in such large numbers, resembling killer whales, was truly mesmerizing.
Whale Sightings and Mugging the Boat
While there weren’t many whales that day, we did get to see two mama whales and their calves. One of the baby whales breached, and the whales even “mugged” the boat. For those unfamiliar with the term, “mugging” means the whales approached and lingered around the boat, giving us an incredibly close view.
Sea Lions
Additionally, we saw several sea lions lounging and playing in the water. Their playful antics added another layer of enjoyment to the trip.
Solo Travel Tips
As a solo traveler, I appreciated the camaraderie among the passengers. People were friendly and eager to share their excitement, which added to the overall experience. If you’re worried about feeling lonely, rest assured that the shared thrill of spotting a whale brings people together.
Final Thoughts
Whale watching in Santa Barbara on the Condor Express was an exhilarating experience and one of the highlights of my trip. For solo travelers, it offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and fellow travelers alike. Whether you’re a seasoned whale watcher or a first-timer, this adventure is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
