RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or Real Simple Syndication (both have been used)
Basically, the RSS feed is a publishing tool in which updated entries from websites, blogs, news headlines, video channels are sent out our published through this “web feed” which includes a summary and a link to the full item.
It’s automatic syndication using an XML format benefitting users who request to receive alerts or notification of the updates from their chosen websites rather than having to visit them time and time again.
The user has the ability to subscribe to an RSS feed and review in their toolbar, or in their email, and now even through social media and other forms.
