And you can drill down even further. Take women’s leather jackets, for example. The long-tail keyword list might include “black leather biker jacket,” “brown leather bomber jacket,” and “vegan leather motorcycle jacket.”
Why do Long-Tail Keyword Research
Using long-tail keywords when creating content is beneficial because it helps people find exactly what they need quickly and easily.

To use the tool, enter a keyword related to your blog topic, and the tool will generate a list of long-tail keywords and relevant data such as search volume, CPC, and competition.
- Analyze the data. Look at the data provided by the tool and identify keywords with a high search volume and low competition. These long-tail keywords are likely to be more effective for your blog content.

There are four main types of search intent:

- Navigational intent: When someone has navigational intent, they’re looking for a specific website or webpage. These queries often include the name of a specific website or brand.
- Transactional intent: When someone has transactional intent, they want to complete a specific action, such as making a purchase or filling out a form. These types of queries often include words like “buy,” “order,” or “download.”
- Commercial (buyer intent): When someone has commercial investigation intent, they’re in the research phase of making a purchase decision. They want to compare products, prices, and features before deciding.
As a general rule, targeting all types of intent is best, as it will help you reach a wider audience and drive more traffic to your website. However, the specific search intent you should target depends on your specific goals and the content you create.
For example, if you’re creating informational content, you’ll want to target informational intent by answering common questions and providing information on a specific topic.
Suppose you’re creating a product or service website. In that case, you’ll want to target transactional and commercial investigation intent by providing information on your products or services and making it easy for people to purchase.
Each keyword tool calls these something different, but the four categories apply.
Analyzing Search Volume, CPC, and Keyword Difficulty
You should look at keyword research’s three most important metrics: volume, CPC (cost per click), and keyword difficulty. Let’s go over each of these metrics in more detail.
Search Volume
Search volume refers to the estimated number of searches performed using a particular keyword within a given period of time.
This metric helps you determine how frequently people search for a specific term or phrase and how it could impact your website traffic.
Generally speaking, the higher the searches, the more opportunity your website has to appear at the top of search results pages.
However, higher search numbers generally means more competition. It’s best to start lower and work your way up. Targeting long-tail keywords with lower search volume but lower competition can be an effective strategy.
These long-tail keywords are more specific, and it’s more likely that you will rank higher in search engine results for them and also attract more targeted traffic.
Some bloggers target zero search keywords. These are usually new long-tail keywords, just starting to trend, or completely unknown. They can be a great way to get your content noticed, as you don’t have much competition in the search results.
A zero-volume keyword is a keyword or phrase with no recorded searches in a given time period. Sometimes, targeting keywords with zero searches but lower competition can effectively drive targeted traffic to your website.
That said, the sweet spot for a new blogger is around 250 monthly searches.
CPC (Cost Per Click)
CPC stands for cost per click and is one of the most important metrics when doing SEO keyword research. This metric measures how much advertisers are willing to pay for each ad click whenever someone searches for a certain keyword or phrase.
While this metric doesn’t necessarily affect your organic rankings, it can give you insight into how profitable a particular keyword might be. If you want to monetize your website with display ads, affiliate marketing, or sponsors, buyer intent keywords with a high CPC can be a great way to do it. However, this metric doesn’t need to be heavily considered in the beginning. It’s something to keep an eye on.
Keyword Difficulty
The last metric you should consider when doing SEO keyword research is “keyword difficulty.” This metric measures how hard it would be to rank highly in search results pages based on competition from other websites targeting the same keyword or phrase.
Generally speaking, if there are already many well-established websites targeting your chosen keywords, it will be difficult (or “challenging”) to outrank them with your own content—but not impossible! By creating top-notch content optimized with relevant keywords and backlinks, you can improve your chances of ranking higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).
SEMrush analyzes the top-ranking pages for a given keyword and assigns a keyword difficulty score to each page based on factors such as the number of backlinks, the domain authority, and referring domains. The higher the score of the top-ranking pages, the more difficult it is to rank for that keyword.
The Keyword Difficulty Tool uses a score from 0 to 100 to indicate the difficulty level of ranking for a particular keyword. A score of 0 means that it is very easy to rank for the keyword, while a score of 100 means that it is very difficult.
For a new website without domain authority, you should target keywords with a difficulty score of less than 20 to have the best chance of ranking in search engine results in pages. Start with those long-tail keyword phrases with a keyword difficulty score of 20 or less, and then your way up to 30, then 40, then 50, and so on.
As you can see, keyword research is important. When you have actionable data about the keywords and phrases your potential customers use, you can optimize your website content to rank higher in search engine results.
