When your website is new or lacks domain authority (weak backlink profile), you must create content optimized for low-competition keywords. I use SEMrush, but you can use your favorite keyword tool. Here’s how to find low-competition keywords in SEMrush.
Here are the steps to use SEMrush to measure keyword difficulty
- Log in to your SEMrush account and select the “Keyword Magic Tool” from the left-hand menu.
- Enter the keyword or phrase you want to analyze in the search bar and hit “Search.”
- Review the search results and select the keyword that best matches your target.
- Scroll down to the “Keyword Difficulty” section, which provides an estimate of how difficult it would be to rank for this keyword on a scale of 0-100.
- Review the additional information provided, such as the top-ranking pages for this keyword, their domain authority, and the number of backlinks they have.
- Use this information to assess the potential difficulty of ranking for this keyword and consider factors such as your own domain authority and the quality of your content.
- If you’re targeting multiple keywords, repeat this process for each one and compare the results to prioritize your efforts.
