Big Cartel Vs Wix: Which website builder is best for your eCommerce website?

Are you going to start your online store? Both Big Cartel and Wix can help you do that. Both are popular and high-functioning cloud website builders, but let’s break them down to help you decide which platform best suits your business.

In general, Big Cartel is a website builder that is specialized in eCommerce. On the other hand, Wix is a generic website builder and allows you to make different kinds of websites, not just eCommerce sites.

Big Cartel and Wix both let you start an online store and manage it. But, an early heads up both these website builders have their limits.

Unfortunately, Big Cartel is not an option for huge stores. The free Gold plan only allows you to list five products, the Platinum plan 50, and even the most premium Titanium plan is capped off at 500 listings.

Wix allows large enterprises to run their businesses but is recommended more for small to medium-sized eCommerce businesses and not large stores because Wix was not explicitly made for eCommerce. There are other website builders or eCommerce platforms you can prefer for a large store.

Nevertheless, considering you are an individual, freelancer, or a small to medium-sized store owner, both Wix and Big Cartel are good options for you.

Who uses Big Cartel?

Big Cartel is usually chosen by individual creators and retailers who promote and sell original work. It is preferred by creative people who want to sell their own handmade, custom creations.

So the listing limit is usually not an issue in these cases because products are limited.

Wix is more broad-based and can support businesses of all sizes.

Design, Features, and Customization

Big Cartel’s design is more suited towards creatives because it has an artistic aesthetic with imaginative and arty themes.

It contains very specifically tailored tools that can get a small store set up in a matter of minutes – for those who have little to no knowledge of coding or web design.

This again makes it ideal for artists whose primary interest is not running a large ecommerce business, but is targeted for selling their work to a specific audience.

As specific as the toolbox in Big Cartel is, it is not a big one. Even the templates you choose from are limited. You will not be able to customize everything, and this is quite a drawback for people who care about web design or want a broader range of functionality in their website.

The only way you can is at the ground level code (HTML or CSS), and even then, you can’t customize everything.

Wix offers a more significant range of templates (but less artistic), sorted by portfolios, and a vast toolbox for customization. It is more breathable for website builders.

But learning what every tool and control can do can be quite frustrating for someone looking for a minimal, ready-made solution.

A significant downside of Big Cartel is that it does not have an in-built blogging platform, which is now becoming an essential part of most Ecommerce sites.

However, Wix has a very advanced blogging platform.

So again, it all comes down to the type of user and their needs.

Customer Support

Like its design and features, Big Cartel does not have as big of a customer support department as Wix does. You can only contact support during working days, and between 9 AM to 6 PM.

The only way to contact them is through email, which is a disadvantage in user comfort, but they are indeed very responsive to all queries.

Wix also has great customer service – better, in fact, because you can also contact them through phone and tickets. Another edge over Big Cartel is that it offers 24/7 support for English speaking customers.

Big Cartel has four pricing plans: Gold (free), Platinum, Diamond, and Titanium. The free one is very restrictive, with only five products supported.

The next plan starts at $9.99 per month with 50 products, Diamond is at $19.99 a month with a maximum size of 250 product listings, and the Titanium plan is at $29.99 a month with a maximum limit of 500 products.

For small eCommerce businesses, the 500 cap is enough. On the other hand, Wix has three Ecommerce and business plans, the basic plan starting at $17 a month.

Unfortunately, there is no free plan here. The next plan is the Business Unlimited plan at $25 a month, while the Business VIP plan is at $35 a month.

With the Business VIP plan, you are allowed to have unlimited products.

But considering the price you have to pay for this and the overall level of support Wix has for large eCommerce businesses, we do not recommend this for big businesses. There are better options.

Bottom line, whether you use Wix or Big Cartel depends on the type of business. If you are a creator who wants to sell limited original works to a targeted audience and need a simple, aesthetic, fast-setup solution, Big Cartel is a good choice.

For bigger businesses and people who need high-end customization features and control, Wix is undoubtedly more prevalent.
